Kona Bikes, professionally know as the Kona Bicycle company, based in Vancouver of British Columbia and
Ferndale of Washington, was established in the year 1988 by Dan Gerhard, Jacob Heilbron and Joe Murray (an
early MTB champion). The company has established itself in producing bikes in more than 10 categories that
cover almost all needs of commuters and pro riders of all ages.
The Kona company has also earned many honours in terms of establishing racing teams, participating and
winning in pro level events and even in introducing programmes like Grassroot Racing. This programme was
started in the same year of 1988 and has attracted more than three thousand riders, riding for Kona.
Since the establishment of the company, the pro level riders of Kona Bicycle company have won numerous
awards in international racing events and with those wins have inspired the company to introduce new and
upgraded models year after year and maintained a well established base of for the company’s products with the
implementation of new technologies.
With those reputed establishments in a quick mode, the company was also able to stretch it’s hand outside the
US by appointing authorized distributors in major European countries like France, England and Sweden which
was a one of the company’s best step forward to enter the competitive European bicycle markets.
While verifying the growth of the company. we can observe that Kona Bikes has taken all the steps in it’s early
days and implemented the improvements in a fast track mode and now the company is mainly concentrating on
taking a note on dos and don’ts of the market and producing some of the world’s simple yet sophisticated bikes,
as an example, we can take a look at the introduction of the first straight leg MTB production fork in 1989, where
there more than ten versions of this fork are still under productions for the 26 inches, 29 inches and 700c asphalt
and mountain bikes.
