Trek Bicycle Corporation is one of the world's largest bicycle and cycling product manufacturers. It was established between 1975 and 1976 by Bevel Hogg and Richard (Dick) Burke, under the brand name Trek Bicycle. The company, which distributes their products under the brands name Trek, Bontrager, Gary Fisher, Klein and recently acquired LeMond Racing Cycles, marketed and sold through more than 1700 retailers across North America and have appointed subsidiaries and distributors around the world in more than 90 countries including in Asia and Europe.
In its first year of operation, Trek manufactured steel touring frames in Waterloo, Wisconsin with an aim of establishing itself in mid and high-end segments, which were dominated by Italian and Japanese manufacturers at the time. They built 900 hand-brazed custom framesets and sold each one at just $200. Soon after, in 1977 the company managed to open their first retail outlet named Penn Cycle in Bloomington, Minnesota and reached sales of around $2,000,000 in just three years.
At present, the company manufactures it’s high-end domestic frames and assembles them in Whitewater, Wisconsin, whilst the rest of major production takes place in China and Taiwan. With so many brand names, the company manufacturers hundreds of models under more the 10 categories ranging from kids starting to ride all the way up to extreme racers.
To add more to the TREK's reputation as environmentally friendly, management is currently running many ECO friendly campaigns. Trek also hold the reputation of helping the 1993 world road race champion Lance Armstrong in signing up for Trek-sponsored United States Postal Service Pro Cycling Team. He then preceded to win his first Tour de France in 1999 on a Trek 5500 and also became the first American to win the Tour in an American team raiding American manufactured bicycle.
